When did you first start CrossFitting?
Late 2009/Early 2010. I wish I would’ve started sooner: I made friends with a grad student from Canada that would talk non-stop about CrossFit, but I just brushed him off. Finally, once I saw the dvd “Every Second Counts” about the 2009 CrossFit Games, I decided to give it a try by doing the WODs at my local gym.
When did you start training at CrossFit South?
When it was still out of our garage!
Favorite WOD or movements?
Grace. Snatches and rowing
Least favorite WOD or movements?
Fran. Burpees and pistols
What sports/health background do you have if any?
Played high school sports, got to college and turned into a globogym meathead, did crew at UGA for a little bit
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit?
Friend tried to get me to join, but I was too stubborn to try it until over a year later. From there I did CrossFit with my brother at the local gym where we were personal trainers. After we got kicked out for having too much fun and producing results with our clients, we converted our garage into our gym. We then got CrossFit certified, and when CrossFit Athens closed in 2012, we decided to open up CrossFit South and haven’t looked back since!
Do you remember your first time doing CrossFit, how did it go?
Yeah. I did the deadlift-burpee WOD from the ’09 Games and it destroyed me. I went home and ate a meal big enough for two I was so famished. Ever since then I’ve hated burpees…
What changes have you seen since starting at CrossFit South?
I’m a lot stronger and more powerful, yet smaller and more flexible and agile than when I first started. I’ve made some great friends and learned a lot from the athletes that come through the gym. I like what I’m doing and I have fun doing it. It’s great!
Any advice for new people starting or contemplating CrossFit?
CrossFit is for A-N-Y-O-N-E! The core of CrossFit is teaching and learning practical functional movements. How often do you sit down and stand up? That’s squatting! How often do you have to pick something up off the ground? That’s a deadlift! What about those of you that have trucks and your friends always bug you to help them move? You’re going to be doing a lot of crap that CrossFit will make you better at! Honestly, CrossFit will make you better at everything.
I know it can seem intimidating, and yes, it can be pretty challenging, but you get out of it what you put into it. If there’s something you can’t do, it’s our job to find something that you can do. Try not to worry about what weight everyone else is using; CrossFit is about bettering yourself while in the company of people with similar attitudes. The people sweating next to you every day are your friends and your family cheering you on to push yourself harder and further than before.
Hobbies/interest outside of a WOD?
I go to school, I run CFS with my brother, and I stay pretty busy. When I’m not doing that, I’m sleeping, eating, playing with my dogs, out with friends, teaching myself the piano, painting, and sleeping again.
Favorite cheat meal?
Ice cream and pizza
What do you want to accomplish by this time next month? In 3 months? Before the end of the year?
Lose some weight to make the bodyweight movements a lot easier. I’d like to break 400# on back squat, and improve my snatch form. And I guess run a sub-7 mile. I hate running.
What type of music do you like to WOD to?
Hard rock, heavy metal, rap, hip-hop, punk rock. Whatever I feel like, it’s my gym! 🙂
