Meet Our Coaches

At CrossFit South, we believe that the quality of our coaching is the best in Athens. Before starting CrossFit South, we were collegiate athletes and personal trainers. All of our assistant coaches come from an athletic background and have been groomed to be amazing coaches. Anyone can open a CrossFit gym and call themselves a coach, but at CFS we believe in pursuing virtuosity and continuing education. We attend seminars and are constantly seeking new information and learning from each other. The world of fitness is constantly evolving and we aim to stay ahead of the curve.

There are less than 100 Level 2 CrossFit Trainers in the state and we are proud to say that CrossFit South is home to the only two Level 2 CrossFit Trainers in Athens, GA!

Before our assistant coaches lead classes, we put them through an 8-week internship to ensure they’re knowledgeable, comfortable, and eager to coach our athletes. Each class is lead by a head coach and at least one assistant coach with classes capped at 10 athletes per coach to maintain a high quality learning environment. We want your time at CFS to be fun, safe, and productive, and at CrossFit South we’ll make you better at everything!

Natalie, also known as Nat and Nattles, is a 35 year old (whoa!) CrossFit junkie.  Although CrossFit is her passion, she took a very bumpy road to get here.  First was a passion for running.  All.  The.  Time.  She ran dozens of half marathons, a marathon, and may other races.  Now she complains when she has to run 400 meters…  Then she entered the world of bodybuilding, while still running.  So it was an endless cycle of build the muscle and then run it all away.  There was even a physique competition thrown in there for good measure.  Never again, she will say.  And then, she found CrossFit South.

Three years later she is still at CrossFit South, and will never leave unless they drag her out.  She has big dreams of going to regionals with a team one day.   And she is only getting older, so sooner rather than later would be nice.  At 35, thanks to CrossFit South, she is in the best shape of her life.  Not only that, it has given her strength and confidence.

She love, love, loves coaching others in the sport of CrosssFit.  Sharing that passion with others and seeing them improve week after week brings joy to her big ole heart.

Outside of the box, she has a career in Landscape Architecture.  Some of her hobbies include cooking, eating all the food, visiting breweries and sampling all the beer, dancing (when no one is watching), spending time with family and friends, swimming, and eating some more.

So, last but not least, a little break down of some favorites and not so favorites of CrossFit:

Favorite WOD:  Kalsu (Yes, for real)

Least Favorite WOD:  Isabell (Ew)

Strengths:  Gymnasty, Endurance

Weaknesses:   Rowing, Snatching, Maxing out on any lift (mental meltdown)

Wrestled in High School, and chose not to continue wrestling in college, but wanted to find something of equal intensity that would push me both physically and mentally. First tried Crossfit at a globo gym in the Winter of 2012 and the first workout I ever did was Fran. I did it with 65# and it took me about 10 minutes. I remember laying on the ground after for about 30 minutes contemplating life and what in the world I had just done. But I loved it and haven’t looked back since.

Favorite Movements: Pretty much anything involving gymnastics. Muscle ups have my heart

Least favorite Movement: Thrusters……by far. They’re mean

Sports/ Health Background: Play Baseball from 5 years old. Wrestled and played baseball in high school. Did a Little Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in college, then turned to Crossfit.. Been a Crossfit Trainer and personal trainer for about 2 years, and am Currently a Nutrition Science Major and studying to be a certified Nutritionist

Favorite Cheat Meal: ICE CREAMMMMM, And some warm Krispy Kreme donuts

Music I Wod to: Some heavy metal is cool. Maybe some Linkin Park. Throw on some Drake though and that’s an automatic PR

I started CrossFit in 11th grade, about 3 years ago. After high school I had a choice to play football and baseball in college. I decided against it and used CrossFit to fill the competitive and physical void in my life. After getting to CrossFit South and learning from my coaches, I decided I wanted to become a coach so I could teach others what I was passionate about. That leads me to now. I love Fran or DT… but my favorite workouts are super gnarly team WODS that build unity and make you feel like a badass at the end. My favorite part of CrossFit is Olympic Lifting. I (we) are really lucky to have found a gym like CrossFit South and I really cannot wait to see what the future holds! ROAD TO REGIONALS!

My name is Andrew Ling, I’m 23 and from a small town called Griffin(40 miles south of Atlanta). I moved up to Athens in 2010 when I started school at UGA. I graduated in 2014 with a Biochemistry degree, hopefully getting into med school somewhere in the future (maybe Fall 2016). Die hard UGA football fan. GO DAWGS! I started Crossfit in 2013 when a friend told me about it. I ended up looking up some videos and I thought it was pretty cool looking and wanted to look like Rich Froning so I decided to look up a Crossfit gym nearby and I found Crossfit South! I started training here and got hooked.  I fell in love with not only working out, but doing functional movements that are used in every day life! The comradery/team/group atmosphere is one of the many awesome things about Crossfit and it really helps you not only push through the tough workouts, but have a lot of fun doing what you like with other people that you like!  “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps us leading us down new paths” –Walt Disney

It was very humbling for sure. I was on the floor, out of breath and ended up being sore for days.

Hometown: Cornelia, Georgia
Occupation: Event Director

When did you first start CrossFitting?
I went to an on-ramp course at a box in my hometown over winter break. I immediately loved it but there wasn’t a Crossfit box near the college I attended so I didn’t have the chance to really learn the correct techniques until moving to Athens and joining CrossFit South.

When did you start training at CrossFit South?
September of 2014

Favorite WOD or movements?
Grace. Cleans and double unders

Least favorite WOD or movements?
Nicole. Burpee box jumps and running

What sports/health background do you have if any?
Played high school sports, college intramurals, and I was the head supervisor at UNG (Dahlonega) Rec Center by the time I graduated.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit?
A brand new box opened up in my hometown owned by a former high school teacher of mine. I was three years into college and getting pretty lazy/bored with the standard globo gym so I took the on-ramp course. I couldn’t touch my toes for three days but it was the best kind of sore and I realized how much I missed being an athlete.

Do you remember your first time doing CrossFit, how did it go?
My first real WOD was 7 minute AMRAP of 7 squats, 7 push-ups, 7 sit-ups at the end of my on-ramp course. I got lapped (multiple times) by a 50 year old banker and I was hooked.

What changes have you seen since starting at CrossFit South?
I’m much stronger and more well-conditioned. There has been a steady stream of PR’s in my lifts and I’m mastering body weight movements I couldn’t even attempt a year ago. More than that, joining CrossFit South has allowed me to invest and be invested in by a community that values hard work and integrity.

Any advice for new people starting or contemplating CrossFit?
Do it. It’s not a fad. It’s not a cult. You don’t have to be diehard. It’s functional fitness, the things you do every day. The only regret I have ever had is not jumping in sooner.

Hobbies/interest outside of a WOD?
I spend a lot of time traveling the country to put on 10K/5K races and basketball tournaments for my job. When I’m not doing that, I love to hike, hammock, and read (so granola, I know). I also enjoy serving at my church, hanging out at Hendershot’s, and playing sports with friends.

Favorite cheat meal?
Queso. Also the Varsity.

What do you want to accomplish by this time next month? In 3 months? Before the end of the year?
I’d like to hit 180# on my clean, string together multiple strict pull-ups, and master the HSPU. I also plan to get my L1 Certification this fall.

What type of music do you like to WOD to?
If it’s loud, I’m down.
