The reason for the poor state of men’s health are numerous and complex and include:

  • Lack of awareness and understanding of the health issues men face
  • Men not openly discussing their health and how they’re feeling
  • Reluctance to take action when men don’t feel physically or mentally well
  • Men engaging in risky activities that threaten their health
  • Stigmas surrounding mental health
  • Men are 24 percent less likely than women to have visited a doctor within the past year

The Movember Foundation aims to change this way of thinking by putting a fun twist on this serious issue. Using the moustache as a catalyst, the idea is to bring about change and give men the opportunity and confidence to learn and talk about their health and take action when needed.

As a global men’s health movement, the Movember Foundation has the ambition to contribute to improving the lives of men around the world. To achieve this, we challenge men to grow moustaches during Movember (the month formerly known as November) to spark conversation and raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems. We see success as moving the dial on progress towards:

  • Reduced mortality from prostate, testicular cancer and men’s suicide
  • Men living with prostate or testicular cancer being physically and mentally well
  • Men and boys understanding how to be mentally healthy and taking action when they experience mental health problems
  • Men and boys with mental health problems not being discriminated against

So what can we do to help?

Starting in November, CrossFit South will donate $1 to our Movember team for every check-in at CrossFit South via Facebook.
We encourage every one to check-in every time they come in to the gym. In those check-ins make sure to mention Movember, and direct your friends to the Movember website at www.movember.com or to this page at www.crossfitsouth.com/movember to help spread awareness.

We would like all our athletes to donate to our Movember team.
I think $20 is a reasonable amount to help out. Our team is CrossFit South, and our direct link is http://us.movember.com/team/1788017. There you can create an account and donate. I will not be handling any money for donations. Everything will be done online. Additionally, you can share your personal page on social media to get friends and family involved.

If you can grow a moustache, grow it to help spread awareness!
Baby faces, beards, and goatees don’t help. Grow a damn moustache.

How else can I get involved?

On Saturday December 6th, we will have an in-house competition…Snatches for Staches!
I will post more details and flyers and sign up sheets at the gym. It will be a partner workout, either 2 guys or 2 girls. There will be Rx’d and Scaled options. It’s free to participate, but I’d encourage you to donate at least $20 to our team. T-shirts will be available for purchase, make sure to designate your size on the sign-up flyers at the gym. Very few extras will be made. T-shirt proofs will be made soon.
